Myanmar liberated itself from the British in 1948, and the school system has expanded rapidly since then. This shift was brought about by a wide network of missionary schools where English was utilized as the language of instruction and teachers arrived from different nations. However, Myanmar's education system changed when Prime Minister Ne Win declared that English was the language of colonizers and should no longer be taught in schools. Despite the importance of education in Myanmar, the country's turbulent political climate has prevented the country's education system from keeping up with current advances. The majority of the time, temples provide secular education. Students in public schools are educated from kindergarten to college.

Structure and format as they now exist:

Myanmar has preschools for children aged two to five. Children begin elementary school at the age of six. Myanmar requires primary school, which runs from Grade 1 to Grade 5. Students who pass a test on all of the core courses can progress to secondary school after five years of primary school. Secondary school in Myanmar is divided into two levels: Middle School and High School. Students between the ages of 12 and 16 attend Middle School, where they complete Grades 6 through 9. They will be promoted to High School if they perform well on the Basic Education Standard VIII Examination. Students attend High School between the ages of 17 and 19, where they complete Grades 10 and 11. To receive their badges, students must pass the Education Standard 10 Examination. They will receive either Diploma A or Diploma B depending on their performance. Only those with a Diploma A are eligible to attend college. Every year in the middle of March, the Myanmar Board of Examinations conducts the University Entrance Examinations.

Several Christian missionary schools for children from wealthy households have opened in major towns such as Yangon and Mandalay. Universities in Myanmar were likewise believed to be the best in the region at the time. However, following the 1962 coup d'etat in Myanmar, the government took over the schools, resulting in a decline in educational quality.
